KHAIRPUR, Feb 6: The police arrested 15 people in Sorah area on Friday for observing hunger strike against the transfer of four labourers of Kadanwari gas field, Nara taluka.

The Kadanwari gas field administration had transferred four labourers - Ranjhan, Goind, Ghulam Akbar and Khadim Bhambhro - to Sawan gas field. The workers claimed that as per conditions of the contract, labourers of Kadanwari field could not be transferred to Sawan gas field.

They had set up a camp outside the main gate of Kadanwari gas field and were observing a token hunger strike. The police went to the camp and asked the protesters to end the strike.

On refusal, the police arrested 15 people including Bagh Ali, Rajib, Walan, Mohabbat, Misri, Manghan. When contacted, Sorah SHO said that police had taken the protesters to hold talks with the administration of the gas field.

SMALLPOX: A girl, Arsan, 10, daughter of Ghulam Asghar Panhwar, died of smallpox in her house in a village of Razidero area of Gambat taluka on Thursday.

At least 10 other children of the area are suffering from the disease. The health department has paid no attention despite a recent increase in the number of smallpox patients in the area.

HEPATITIS-B: Several people have been afflicted with hepatitis-B in ten villages of Kotdiji and Kingri talukas. This was revealed by a survey conducted by this correspondent on Friday. In Aarab Machhi village near Kumb, two persons, Babra and Mahi Khan Solangi, died of the disease on Eidul Azha day.

A minor girl, Soomran 6, died in Khand Mohammad Shar village of Kingri taluka. Reports said five other persons had also recently died of hepatitis-B in the same village.

Several other men, women and children are suffering from the fatal disease in different villages of two talukas. The health department of Sindh as well Khaipur district government have not taken any step in this regard.

ACCIDENT: At least 12 people were injured in a head-on collision between a passenger wagon and pickup on the Kumb-Nawabshah road on Thursday.

Those injured were identified as Pir Bux Bradi, Tayabuddin Rajpar, Yasin Rajpar, Ameer Bux Bhambhan, Satabo Bhambhan, Peeral Phul, Hassan Jamali, Balam Solani, Bashir Ahmed and Ghafoor Khawajo. The Faiz Ganj police registered a case against the pickup driver, Ameer Ali, who escaped from the scene leaving behind the vehicle.
