SIALKOT: Pasrur UC without Nazim

Published February 17, 2004

SIALKOT, Feb 16: The Kingra union council in Pasrur tehsil has been without a Nazim and a Naib Nazim for the last three years. According to details, Nusrat Hameed Thakur was elected Nazim of Kingra UC in the elections three years ago.

His rival Rasheed Ahmad challenged the results in the Lahore High Court which granted stay and ordered re-counting of the votes cast. Nusrat was declared successful by the LHC after the re-counting.

Rasheed moved the Supreme Court against the LHC decision. Six months ago, the apex court directed the presiding officer / the additional district and sessions judge of Pasrur to decide the matter.

Nusrat alleged that his rival had been seeking adjournments from the court on one pretext or the other. There has been no development work in the union council, as the Sialkot district government did not release funds because of non-availability of a Nazim.

INAUGURATION: National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Ameer Husain inaugurated on Monday the supply of electricity to the extended areas between Chhani Dhairo-Looni to Belli Dehr-Looni in Bajwat sector. The project will be completed at a cost of Rs700,000.

At public gatherings in border villages, the speaker said the government was paying special attention to the uplift of this sector's 85 far-flung villages. He said the construction of a bridge over Tavi river would be started soon at a cost of Rs160 million.
