FAISALABAD, Feb 19: The district government has decided to impose a ban on pillion-riding from Muharram 1 as a precautionary measure to keep the law and order situation under control during the holy month.
Children, women and elderly people will be exempted from the ban which will continue till further orders. Official sources told this correspondent here on Thursday that the step had been taken by District Nazim Zahid Nazir after detailed discussions with the heads of law-enforcement agencies "to protect the lives and properties of the people during Muharram."
Meanwhile, District Nazim Zahid Nazir has urged the ulema of all schools of thought to play their role to maintain harmony during Muharram. The Nazim was presiding over a meeting held in connection with Muharram arrangements on Thursday.
He asked the mourners to strictly abide by the settled and agreed upon places, routes and timings of their functions, specially Majalis and processions, so that no mischief-monger could try to create problem for the law-enforcers as well as people of the district.
CASE REGISTERED: The Anti-Corruption Establishment has registered cases against 14 employees of different government departments on charges of corruption, misuse of powers and causing loss to the exchequer.
Cases have been registered on the orders of ACE Additional Director Rai Muhammad Amin, who had received complaints from the public against the officials.
Mahboobul Hassan, senior clerk of a polytechnic institute of Lahore, has been booked for receiving Rs67,000 bribe; police Sub-Inspector Muhammad Razzaq and ASI Muhammad Rafique for taking illegal gratification of Rs11,500 and Rs5,000, respectively.
Lecturer Muhammad Younas, SIs Muhammad Rafique and Ghulam Akbar, ASIs Riaz Hussain and Muhammad Anwar, constables Zulfiqar Ali and Ghulam Shabbir, deputy superintendent of Sargodha Jail Muhammad Ilyas, Inspector Khalid Mahmood and four employees of the Livestock Department have been booked for misusing their official position. A case has been registered against Jhang TMA contractor Abdul Rahman for causing a loss to the exchequer.
