SIALKOT, Feb 27: The agriculture department will soon launch a project under which new water courses would be built to ensure adequate supply of irrigation water, especially to the farmers at tail ends.
This was told to newsmen by Sialkot EDO (agriculture) Rana Farman Ali here on Friday. He said 155 schemes of constructing new water courses costing Rs160.5 million would be launched with active participation of the people.
He said wheat has been sown on 467,650 acres in the district. He said a bumper crop was expected this year due to timely rains. He said potato has been cultivated on 22,720 acres, while sunflower would be sown on 2,232 acres this season.
ROBBERIES: Robbers and thieves took away a car, motorcycles, electronics, cash and other valuables worth millions of rupees in several strikes in the district here.
In Ban Phaatak, three gunmen deprived trader Zahid Sadiq of his car (LRP-7676) at gunpoint. Three robbers took away gold jewellery and other valuables worth Rs200,000 from the house of Malik Ashfaq in Chah Tarkhana area. They reportedly beat up women on offering resistance.
Thieves stole valuables worth Rs10,000 from the house of labourer Sadiq in Ban Phaatak locality. Ten bandits looted gold ornaments, cash and other valuables worth Rs150,000 from the house of Malik Bashir Afzal in Nai Abadi, Muradpur.
Four highwaymen set up a picket near Kapoorwali village and deprived several people of cash and other valuables. Three outlaws snatched Rs30,000 in cash and a mobile phone at gunpoint from trader Nabeel Butt on Capital Road.
Arshad was deprived of his motorcycle (STP-2871) on Khwaja Safdar Road by two armed men. Five robbers snatched thousands of rupees in cash and a mobile phone at gunpoint from Salim near Ballaanwala village, Kotli Loharan, and fled away by deflating one of the tyres of his motorcycle.
Thieves stole gold ornaments worth Rs100,000 from the house of Zulfiqar Ali on Zafar Ali Road in Sialkot Cantonment area. Two highwaymen robbed the passengers of a bus of gold ornaments, cash and other valuables worth around Rs300,000 near Pasrur. Some women were also beaten up by them on offering resistance.
Five dacoits snatched gold ornaments and cash worth Rs200,000 from Younas and his wife. In Gojra village, Daska, four gunmen looted gold ornaments, cash and other valuable worth Rs100,000 from the house of Saifullah. Thieves stole spare parts from the auto workshop of Asif Mahmood near Boys Degree College, Daska.
