THATTA, March 9: Hundreds of People's Party Parliamentarians activists on Tuesday staged a sit-in on the Badin-Karachi highway passing through Sujawal to protest against the killing of party MPA Abdullah Murad Baloch.
The traffic remained suspended for three hours due to the sit-in. Speaking on the occasion, Thatta PPP senior vice-president Syed Masood Mustafa Shah, Mohsin Sindhi, Sujawal taluka general-secretary Hameed Parheri and others said the murder of the MPA in Karachi, registration of what they called a fake FIR against 22 PPP activists in Thatta and recent attacks on Imtiaz Qureshi and other party activists in the district showed the failure of the government in maintaining law and order.
Earlier, the activists took out a procession. Carrying banners and placards and wearing black arm bands, they raised slogans against the government. They also burnt tyres on the highway.
RBOD: Writers and environmental activists have demanded a study on environmental effects of the under construction Right Bank Outfall Drain on the Haleji Lake should prior to its passage near the lake.
Renowned writer Ghulam Hussain Rangrez, Riaz Wagan, Sadiq Khwaja, Dr Dilawar Memon and others, in a statement faxed to Dawn, said the lake was already environmentally sensitive due to excessive siltation, uncontrolled fishing and weeds.
They feared the RBOD effluent might prove harmful to the ecosystem of the lake, which had been declared a Ramsar site. They recalled the Left Bank Outfall Drain had wreaked havoc during the last year's floods in Badin and Thatta district due to its ill-planning and improper alignment.
