KHAIRPUR, March 21: The Hingorja police have arrested Sobhodero taluka PPP general-secretary Sarwar Tunio and are torturing him to force him to withdraw support for a candidate of the Awam Dost Panel in the by- elections.

This was alleged by a group of the ADP union council Nazims, led by Syed Amjad Shah Jilani, while talking to journalists here on Sunday. They also complained that police raided the house of a woman candidate of the Sami Union Council, Nooran, and harassed her to force her to withdraw from the contest.

Meanwhile, the Khairpur Dost Panel announced names of five candidates for the seats of Nazims in union councils. They are Syed Shahzad Shah for the Jilani UC, Ghulam Haider Phul for the Mohsin Shah UC, Mohammad Nawaz for the Kandiari UC, Ahadul Hussain Mari for the Mohabbat Wah UC and Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah for the Hingorja UC.

Candidates of the ADP are Syed Shafqat Ali Shah for the Jilani UC, Mohammad Dawood Phul for the Mohsin Shah UC, Asif Ali Khan Bhambhan for the Kandiari UC, Ahmad Ali Jumani for the Mohabbat Wah UC and Dr Khudadad Abro for the Hingorja UC.

UNICEF: UNICEF will support the district government in implementing primary education, immunization, sanitation, capacity development in planning and child protection projects.

This was announced by Sindh UNICEF chief Rana Shah while speaking at a meeting of the district planning department and UNICEF at the health development centre here on Sunday.

District Nazim Nafisa Shah, who presided over the meeting, welcomed the UNICEF team and thanked it for providing financial assistance to the district. EDOs of health, education and other departments, representatives of different NGOs and Nazims of union and taluka councils attended the meeting.

SUICIDE ATTEMPT: A girl, Habi 16, tried to commit suicide by taking some poisonous liquid in Bozdar Wada due to some family dispute on Saturday evening.

KILLED: Bakht Ali Khandhoro was killed and Ghulam Mustafa Kubar was injured when a truck hit a motorcycle on the Adam Sultan Link Road near here on Saturday evening.
