GUJRANWALA, March 23: The district and sessions judge, Riazul Hassan Alvi, has directed the jail authorities to install scanners and detectors in all the lock-ups to avoid any misadventure.

Speaking at the monthly crime meting on Tuesday, the judge said it was the responsibility of the jail authorities to ensure tight security in and around the jails.

He hoped that the scanners and detectors could help apprehend the culprits. He directed the jail officials to ensure proper checking of goods of the inmates by detectors, and maintain registers.

UNDERPASSES: Two underpasses will be constructed in the city. At a meeting here on Tuesday, railways general manager Aurangzeb said the railways had provided land to the city tehsil council for the construction of these underpasses.

Later, the general manager visited the Made-in-Gujranwala industrial exhibition at the Ghulshan Iqbal Park. Meanwhile, various senior government officers, including Export Promotion Bureau vice-chairman Tariq Iqbal, also visited the exhibition.

ROBBERY BID: The National Highway and Motorway Police foiled a robbery attempt and arrested an outlaw when he was fleeing after looting valuables from a house on the GT Road at Kamoki on Tuesday.

Reports said four outlaws entered the house of vegetable dealer, Noor Muhammad, locked the inmates in a room and collected Rs100,000 in cash, gold jewellery and other valuables.

Later, they escaped one by one from the house when one of them, carrying booty, came to the GT Road. Smelling a rat, a motorway police party chased him, but he opened fire on police. Following an exchange of fire, he surrendered himself.

The motorway police arrested him and handed him over to the Kamoki police. However, the other three managed to escape. The police recovered goods and illicit arms from their possession. Meanwhile, a woman also foiled a robbery bid in her house by raising an alarm. People of the area reached there and caught the culprit.
