ISLAMABAD, April 14: President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday reiterated Pakistan's commitment and support to the Bonn process, national reconciliation, and a durable political dispensation in Afghanistan.

He was talking to Jean Arnault, special representative of the UN secretary-general on Afghanistan and head of United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, who called on him here on Wednesday.

The president said Pakistan attached the highest priority to the return of peace and stability in Afghanistan, adding it was of great importance to that country's neighbours. He identified three key components for starting the Bonn process towards the success and said the political and electoral process should reflect the ethnic balance.

He said that to assure the people with security, the writ of the central government should be extended to all parts of Afghanistan for which ISAF's presence should be expanded, in terms of numbers and overage, and the Afghan National Army strengthened.

He said it was also vital that reconstruction efforts be stepped up to provide the element of economic security for the Afghan people. In respect of Afghanistan's reconstruction, President Musharraf outlined Pakistan's commitment of $100 million.

The President assured Mr Arnault of Pakistan's cooperation to the United Nations in the fulfilment of its objectives in Afghanistan. The UN special representative briefed the president on the UN's mission in Afghanistan and its projected activities including the one on preparations for the forthcoming elections as well as facilitation of reconstruction of Afghanistan. -APP
