HYDERABAD, May 10: Over two dozen activists of Awami Tehrik including women observed a token hunger strike outside the press club on Monday to protest against the killing of two women, Abida and Tahmina , on the pretext of Karo-kari in Shikarpur district.
Talking to newsmen, Awami Tehrik general secretary Abrar Qazi, Sindhiani Tehrik president Nazeer Qureshi, Syed Alam Shah and others demanded that perpetrators of Karo-kari should be awarded exemplary punishment.
They said that the government was directly responsible for such despicable crimes as it had strengthened the feudal system in Sindh. They alleged that the feudal lords were issuing orders for the murder of innocent women and no action was taken against them.
They claimed that the government had given a new life to the regressive feudal system by allowing feudal gentry to rule over the helpless people. They demanded that murderers of Tahmina and Abida should be arrested and publicly hanged. They demanded that the judicial system in Sindh should be strengthened and the patronage of feudal lords should be stopped forthwith.
TAX OVERCHARGING: The Livestock Traders' Welfare Association has expressed concern over overcharging of tax by contractors of taluka administrations at cattle markets in different parts of Sindh.
In a statement issued here on Monday, the president of the association, Baloch Khan Lashari, and others alleged that the taluka nazims and contractors were violating the tax schedule. They said that the official rate per animal was Rs3 but the contractors were charging Rs30 on a goat or lamb and Rs500 on a cow or buffalo.
They said that if any livestock trader refused to pay the amount, hoodlums and police were used by the contractors to force him to make the payment. They further said that the paid amount was not mentioned on receipts issued to the traders and the tax schedule had been removed from livestock markets.
They alleged that the taluka nazims were involved in the unlawful practice because in most of the cases, the contractors were their relatives. They appealed to the authorities to take notice of what they called extortion, failing which they would be forced to observe a strike.
