GUJRANWALA, May 10: The ring leader of a gang receiving various local body taxes on fake receipts was caught red-handed by the Saddar Tehsil Municipal Administration from the general bus stand here on Monday.
Police recovered a fake receipt book of tax A-5, notice forms, court notice forms and stamps of the Saddar TMA, the city tehsil councils of Kamoki, Wazirabad, Naushera Virkan and Daska and registered a case against him.
Reports said Abdul Razzaq of Rajoki, Daska, and his men had been collecting various taxes imposed by the local bodies on fake receipts for the last two years. On a complaint, Saddar tehsil council Nazim Mubashar Cheema directed the TMA to catch the impostors.
On Monday, Razzaq was present at the general bus stand when a tehsil council party caught him and later handed him over to the Model Town police. The police are conducting raids for the arrest of his accomplices.
CRITICIZED: The local chamber of commerce and industry has criticized the income tax department for issuing notices to the business community for their audit.
At a meeting held here on Monday with chamber president Shaikh Shaukat Javed in the chair, the participants said on the one hand the government had introduced the universal self-assessment scheme for the promotion of investment and creating more job opportunities, but on the other it was harassing the business community by issuing them notices for audit.
They suggested that the universal self-assessment scheme should be continued for three to four years, and urged the government to abolish the method of audit or issuing notices to the business community otherwise they would wind up their business.
POLICE CLAIM: The district police claimed on Monday to have arrested 24 members of seven gangs of dacoits and robbers, 204 proclaimed offenders and 92 court fugitives and recovered a huge quantity of illegal arms and looted goods from them during a drive last month.
Speaking at a meeting here, DPO Saud Aziz said three Kalashnikovs, 50 rifles, 74 guns, 49 pistols, seven revolvers, five carbines and 925 rounds besides the looted goods worth Rs4.4 million were recovered from them.
