HYDERABAD, May 17: The president, Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union, Abdul Latif Nizamani, has urged the Wapda employees to work for success of the union in the ensuing referendum.

He was speaking at a workers' meeting held at the Labour Hall here on Sunday in connection with the referendum scheduled for June 3, which will determine a collective bargaining agent for over 130,000 Wapda employees.

Mr Nizamani said the Hydro union was facing a narrow-minded rival union which was a labour wing of a political party and had always harmed interest of the workers.

Recalling achievements of his union, he said that the Hydro union had defeated the rival union in two referendums because it had served the Wapda employees with a sincerity of purpose

The labour leader said the future of Wapda employees would be safe if the Hydro union was again elected. Others who spoke on the occasion included Iqbal Khan, Safdar Siddiqui, Aslam Alam, Mohammad Hanif and Iqbal Kaimkhani.

PAIGHAM UNION: On the other hand, the Pakistan Wapda Employees Paigham Union unfolded its manifesto at a press conference. Salient features of the manifesto include struggle against the President's Order 2000, regularization of contract and daily wage employees, increase in salary and allowances of Wapda workers equal to those of the Karachi Electric Supply Company, increase in house rent and restoration of employees' job quota.
