GUJRANWALA, May 17: Women teachers and other low-paid employees of Home Economics School on Monday demonstrated outside the offices of DCO and Divisional Director (Audit) for not releasing their salaries for the last three months.

They chanted slogans against the audit officials and also beat their chests in protest. They alleged that the Audit department was the main hurdle in the way of releasing their salaries.

The protesting teachers and the other school staff said that they were facing severe financial crunch due to the non-payment of their salaries. They called upon the authorities concerned to take stock of the situation.

CONDEMNED: Opposition members of the district council criticized the treasury group and District Nazim for not providing funds for the completion of uplift projects in their areas.

At a district council meeting here on Monday under the chairmanship of Naib Nazim Haji Goher Zaman, the opposition members voiced in favour of their demand and suggested that funds should be provided equally for uplift projects.

Upon this, District Nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha assured the house that he would provide funds to each union council equally for uplift projects. He said at least Rs150 million would be spent on the provision of better facilities to educational institutions.

Besides, he said around Rs40 million would be incurred on the construction of concrete drains in remote areas for the smooth flow of water to fields. The District Nazim pointed out that about 98 development schemes out of 186 had been completed while 20 more schemes would be completed by the end of June 30.

SUSPENDED: An SI and two headconstables were suspended from service on the charges of corruption here on Monday. SI Tahir Mahmood of Kamoke police station was suspended by DPO Saud Aziz while traffic police headconstables Asgher Ali and Shahzad were suspended by Traffic SP Intisar Jaffery.

KILLED: A passer-by died on Monday in an armed clash between two rival groups over a bus stand issue in Noor Bawa locality here. Reports said Usman Butt was passing through the locality where two groups, led by Shahzad Butt and Naeed Butt, were exchanging fire. Consequently, a bullet hit him and he died on the spot.
