SHEIKHUPURA, May 25: A union council Nazim was killed and two others were seriously injured when their rivals opened fire on them on Ferozewala courts premises here on Tuesday.

The deceased, Ferozewala UC-23 Nazim Saif Virk, had come to the court in connection with a case. Accompanied by Haji Nasar and Tariq, he was leaving the court when he came under fire from 10 people, who allegedly belonged to a rival "Zaman Chattha group".

The incident, which created panic on court premises and sent everybody scurrying for cover, left Saif dead and Nasar and Tariq seriously injured. The latter were taken to the Lahore Mayo Hospital. The Tehsil Bar president alleged that the incident took place in police presence. The area police are investigating the matter.

OUR LAHORE REPORTER ADDS: Police said that family of the deceased Nazim had accused Zaman Chattha and his two sons, Kashif and Imran, of carrying out the attack. govt under fire: The precarious condition of sewerage and unavailability of clean water are reportedly causing a great deal of inconvenience to citizens.

Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had announced Rs50 millions for drainage and provision of clean drinking water during his visit last year, but the projects to this effect had not be started so far.

Deploring the situation, the Citizens Welfare Society (CWS) in its meeting held here on Monday, said that the local government representatives seemed to be least interested in resolving basic problems.

The participants said the drain water usually flows into the houses in low-lying localities, damaging household articles. Talking to newsmen, a delegation of nazims, led by UC-64 nazim, Azeem Yazdani criticized the performance of district and tehsil governments.
