HYDERABAD, May 27: The professors of Dr M.A.Qazi Institute of Chemistry, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, have cautioned the people of Latifabad that the water being supplied to Unit No.4 should not be considered safe for human consumption.

A copy of the analysis report obtained by Dawn said that Dr.M.Y.Khuhawar and Dr.S.M.Laghari analysed the water samples collected from the Indus River and being supplied to Latifabad Unit No.4 on Wednesday and found high amounts of total dissolved salts in the water and significant amounts of blue-green algae and thus the water was unsafe for human consumption.

According to the report, Total Dissolved Salts found in the water amounted to about 1020 milligrams/Litre of water, while a significant amount of blue green algae was found in the water and it is considered unsafe for human consumption.

The scholars have suggested that the water downstream from Kotri Barrage may be allowed to dilute the salt content and pollutants within the area of Kotri and Latifabad so as to improve the water quality to make it fit for human consumption.

The report further said the temperature of the water was at 31.4 degrees Centigrade, Ph value was 7.12, conductivity us/cm 1593, salinity g/L 0.8, TDS mg/L 1019.5.

Meanwhile, the water level upstream from Kotri from where water is supplied to Hyderabad has further improved as the water flow has increased to 5487 cusecs.
