BAHAWALPUR, May 27: A fresh polio case has been detected at Chak 55-DB near Yazman, about 30 kilometres from here. Reports said seven-month-old Naqqash, the son of labourer Muhammad Riaz , had an attack of high fever the other day due to which his left leg was affected.

Naqqash's mother Sughran Bibi said the infant was showing symptoms of disability, though he was administered anti-polio drops during the recent drive. Earlier, five-month-old Muhammad Waheed of Chak 42-DB was also infected by the disease, his family claimed.

When contacted, EDO (Health) Dr Arshad Dar denied receiving any such report and said no polio case had been detected here in the last two years. However, he said, the department would initiate an inquiry into the case.

MUSEUM RENOVATION: A comprehensive plan will be chalked out to renovate the local museum for which the Punjab chief minister will give funds, according to District Nazim Tariq Cheema.

Presiding over a meeting of the museum's board of governors on Thursday, he announced Rs500,000 for purchasing antiques of late Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi for the museum. Museum Director Hafiz Husain Ahmad Madni informed the board that its (museum's) documentary film would be prepared for tourists and visitors.

CRITICISM: PPP's former district president Begum Hameeda Ghauri has criticized party's divisional coordinator Mian Imtiaz Ahmad and other members of a committee for her removal from the office. Speaking at a press conference at her residence on Thursday, Begum Ghauri said she had faced trials and tribulations during her 37-year affiliation with the party.

She said she would not accept the decision of Qasim Zia and only bow to the decision of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, who had issued her re-nomination letter in July.

BYPOLLS: The Election Commission of Pakistan announced here on Thursday that nomination papers for the by election to PP-269, PP-275 and PP-276 would be received till tomorrow (Saturday). The papers would be scrutinized on May 31 and June 1 while appeals could be filed by June 4. These would be decided by tribunal on June 8.
