KARACHI, May 30: Sana Bhagat made history at the Karachi Club, when she won the ladies singles title for the fourth consecutive time in the Anti-Tobacco Day Tennis Tournament organised by the Pakistan Women's Tennis Association on Sunday evening.
The 24-year-old beat back the spirited challenge of Zarmeen Shoaib 6-2, 7-5, to emerge a very happy young lady after it seemed that Zarmeen would force the match to the wire.
Sana began in great style taking a flying 4-1 lead with her forehand and double fisted backhand volleys. Zarmeen fighting hard to stem the tide, did manage to cut down the lead 2-4, but Sana with two splendid aces picked up the first set 6-2.
Playing from the baseline Zarmeen serving for the second frame went 1-0 ahead which increased to 2-0 after breaking Sana's service. Continuing to play attacking tennis Zarmeen cashing in on her service and breaking Sana once again was racing ahead 4-0, which saw the champion throw down her racquet in disgust.
Sana returned the compliments to grab her first point in the second set but was dismayed when Zarmeen broke her service for the third successive time to take a 5-1 lead and only a game away from equalising the set scores 1-1.
But it was not to be. Sana on the attack once again caught her opponent on the wrong foot time and again with fine passing shots and creeping up slowly was 5-5 abreast, as her large band of friends began cheering her on with every stroke.
Zarmeen was terribly disappointed when Sana broke her service again at a crucial time and then cashing in on her own service, the champion pocketed the set and the match 7-5 with a fierce forehand drive that left her opponent stranded on the court.
The men's singles was picked up by top seed Aqeel Khan, but not before he was extended to three gruelling sets by second seed Nomi Qamar. Playing magnificent tennis Nomi not only surprised the Pakistan No.1 but also the huge gathering by breezing through the first set 6-1.
Aqeel still finding it hard to get into his rythm, was locked 3-3 in the second set. But managing to break away won the second 6-3 to level the set scores 1-1. With both players on the attack another sea saw tussle ensued till 4-4 in the final set. Aqeel then cashing on Nomi's unforced errors won the final set and the match 6-4.
The men's doubles encounter also went to the wire with the Khan brothers Aqeel and Jalil finally prevailing by beating the spirited challenge of Nomi Qamar and Asad Bhagat 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).
