HYDERABAD, June 6: A seminar on "Tribalism and Survival of Sindhi National Unity" has demanded implementation of the ban on holding jirga and suo motu action by the higher judiciary against chieftains violating the law.

The seminar, organized by the Sindh National Welfare Association at the press club here on Saturday, further demanded that honour killings should be declared murders and no relief be provided to perpetrators of the heinous crime of karo-kari.

It called for registering cases against chieftains for killings in tribal feuds. The seminar, in another resolution, strongly opposed creation of new districts in Sindh.

Speaking at the seminar, leaders of public opinion and intellectuals said that terrorist activities on political, tribal and religious basis were aimed at destroying Sindh. They called upon conscientious people of the province to launch a struggle against tribal and sectarian terrorism and fundamentalism.

In his presidential speech, noted scholar and intellectual Mohammad Ibrahim Joyo said a ban should be imposed on parties and groups doing politics in the name of religion and tribalism.

Sindhi Adabi Sangat secretary-general Taj Joyo said that the province was being destroyed due to political, tribal and sectarian terrorism. He stressed the need for launching a joint struggle against tribalism and fundamentalism.

He alleged that history and geography subjects were being deleted from the syllabus to destroy the educational system of Sindh. Ayaz Latif Palijo said that there was a need for creating awakening among people against tribalism.

He said Sindh would remain behind developed nations as long as tribalism in the province persisted. The others who spoke on the occasion included Prof Mehtab Ali Shah, Nazeer Memon, Ghulam Rasool Chandio and Prof Ghulam Hussain.

DEMO: The National Commission for Justice and Peace held a protest demonstration against the killing of people in Karachi, jirga system and the custom of karo-kari outside the press club here on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Suba Bhatti and Imtiaz Boota condemned the attacks on worship places, schools and hospitals. They said that thousands of innocent women had fallen prey to karo-kari and the jirga system.

They said that excesses were being committed in interior of Sindh against peasants and factory workers in cities were being exploited and they were not being paid their salaries according to the law.

They said that retired employees and their families were starving due to non-payment of pensions and gratuities to them. They regretted that contrary to this, salaries of legislators had been increased manifold.
