HYDERABAD, June 7: The district government is being sidelined by the district relief committee in the distribution of compensation to people affected by the last year's heavy rains in the district.

A district government source told this correspondent on Sunday that the DRC was scheduled to start the process of distribution on Monday and Tuesday among the rain-hit people.

The district nazim, who is a DRC member, taluka nazims as well as MNAs/MPAs were not informed about the programme formally. The district nazim sent a complaint to the chief secretary, mentioning alleged irregularities being committed in distribution of relief money.

He noted that it was decided to give Rs5,000 and Rs10,000 for partially and fully damaged houses but now the amount had been reduced to Rs4,000 and Rs8,000 without taking other DRC members into confidence.

A revenue department source said that since the amount was insufficient that was why it had to be reduced. He said that there was a lack of coordination between the district government and DRC.

Following heavy rains in parts of Sindh in July last year, the Sindh government had formed DRCs in different districts to assess losses caused by rains. The DRC Hyderabad was headed by adviser to Sindh chief minister on home affairs, Aftab Ahmed Sheikh.
