HYDERABAD, June 10: Members of the Taluka city council on Wednesday demanded that a case be registered against the former Sindh irrigation minister and the irrigation secretary for being responsible for supply of contaminated water that killed 42 people in the city.

They called upon the prime minister and the Sindh governor to take action against, what they called, the real culprits. Abdul Hameed Khan said that the minister and secretary were protected while some officials had been booked.

The council appointed a committee headed by convenor Abdul Qadir Naghar to hold a meeting with the DCO regarding Rs120 million funds to be provided by the Sindh government to carry out water projects.

Other members of the committee are Qamaruddin Sheikh, Waheed Ajmeri, Roshan Chohan and Usman Abbasi. The members demanded release of compensation announced for the victims who died after the consumption of toxic water.

PROTEST: At least 100 residents of the union council-5 blocked the Sarfaraz incline road to protest against non- availability of water. They burnt tyres and raised slogans against WASA authorities.

They said that matter had been brought to the notice of authorities but in vain. UC Nazim Dilshad Khan told newsmen that for the last three months there was a shortage of water while in the last week there was no supply of water.

HEALTH WORKERS CASE: The Sindh High Court, Hyderabad circuit bench, on Thursday ordered the district and sessions judge of Tharparkar not to interfere in the matter of three women health workers against whom a human rights application had been filed before the sessions judge.

The counsel of the petitioners, Ms Willayat, Ms Lakhma and Ms Adan, said that an inquiry against the women health workers was being conducted by the district and sessions judge on what he called a frivolous application which fell outside his jurisdiction.

He observed that the matter related to terms and conditions of services of the petitioners and it had nothing to do with human rights. Sindh additional advocate general Masood A. Noorani also supported the argument of the petitioners' counsel.

The court issued a notice to Mohammad Usman, who had filed the application before the sessions judge of Tharparkar, and fixed the matter for June 22.

PROBE ORDERED: A bench of the Sindh High Court, Hyderabad circuit, on Thursday directed the DPO of Sanghar and the deputy director, Anti-Corruption Establishment, to hold an investigation into a land acquisition matter in which a man, who claimed to be the counsel of the petitioner, demanded compensation.
