KHAIRPUR, June 10: People from more than 20 villages took out a procession for the second consecutive day in Gambat on Thursday to protest against the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company's decision to disconnect power supply to their villages.
Talking to journalists, Gulzar Khwaja, Imtiaz Surhio and Ali Taqi said that Hesco officials had disconnected electricity to more than 20 villages, including Nooraja, Malang Manghrio, Paleja, Moosa Narejo and Faqir Miral Narejo, since last month.
The power supply was severed despite the fact that they had paid their bills, allegedly for not giving the officials illegal gratification, they added. They warned that they would lodge a case against the officials, besides staging a sit-in at the Khairpur bypass, if power was not restored in 24 hours.
DISPUTE: Ten people were injured in a clash between two groups of the Buriro tribe in Khanan Buriro village, Kot Diji taluka, on Wednesday night.
Each group attacked the other with sticks and axes, which resulted in injuries to Ghulam Raza, Muneer Ahmed, Mohammad Fazal and Arbab of the first group and Arz Mohammad, Ghulam Kazim, Yaseen Ahmed, Hakim Ali, Sikandar Ali and Ghulam Qambar of the other group.
The injured were admitted to the Kot Diji Taluka Hospital but, later, shifted to the Khairpur Civil Hospital.
HIGHWAYMEN: Some unidentified armed men snatched a motorcycle from Ehsan Gaho, son of famous "Sughar" Mohammad Soomar Gaho, on the Kumb-Nawabshah road on Wednesday night near the Talpur Wada police post of the Kot Diji police.
ROHRI CANAL: Embankments of the Rohri Canal have weakened at the Ranipur bridge and surrounding area, with the erosion leaving the embankments only about three to four feet wide, which may develop a breach any moment.
United Memon Jamaat president Mohammad Haroon Memon told journalists on Thursday that 16,000 cusecs of water was flowing through the canal that had 20-foot-high embankments at Ranipur city.
If they developed a breach, the entire city would be submerged in about two to three hours while Gambat, Sobhodero, Hingjora and other areas would also be flooded, he said and added that if the government did not take immediate action in this regard, the havoc thus caused would be beyond imagination.
However, Sindh Hari Committee senior vice president comrade Ismail Qureshi told journalists in Ranipur that the Khairpur west feeder had been closed to supply extra water to Sanghar district through the canal. Water was flowing at 15,000 to 16,000 cusecs through the canal that had a maximum capacity of about 14,000 cusecs, he added.
CANAL CLOSURE: West division irrigation engineer has ordered official closure of 10 minor canals for nine days due to shortage of water in the Sukkur Barrage from June 7 to 15. The minors are the Khabber, Babarloi and Faiz Wah systems; the Kupri, Palh, Priyaloi, Phul Wahan, Allahabad and Ahmedpur minors; and the Lalan distributary.
