HYDERABAD, June 11: A joint team of the WHO and Unicef has called for significant improvement in water supply system of Hyderabad and observed that water being supplied to people is not safe and the Wasa lagoons are heavily silted.
The team, led by Dr Hamed A. Bakir, Adviser, Rural Environment and Health, WHO, and Mohammad El-Fapih Yusaf of Unicef, paid visits to water works of the Water and Sanitation Agency with the DCO and the Wasa officials here on Friday.
The WHO official told this correspondent that his team would pay more visits and prepare its analysis report in order to find out a solution to the problem. The Unicef official called for collective efforts by the community and the government to find out a solution.
He said that water supply system of Hyderabad was quite expensive and it only needed proper functioning and management. Referring to the team's observation about water system of the city, the DCO said that the team also noted that the new filter plant needed overhauling whereas old filter plant required renovation.
