KOHAT, June 30: An assistant sub-inspector was killed and a constable seriously injured in a grenade attack during an armed clash with a proclaimed offender near Sheikhan village on Tuesday.

An accused who was arrested minutes before the shootout for carrying drugs and was in the vehicle also received injuries in exchange of firing. ASP, headquarters, Capt Mohammad Atta told a news conference that ASI Shafiullah along with his guards was on a routine patrol when the incident occurred at 9.30am.

The ASI after arresting a drug pusher was returning to the Jangle Khel police station when he found a suspicious person coming out of bushes on the highway near Bazid Khel bridge.

He asked the man to stop for search who instead opened fire at the police party. Constable Haziq ur Rehman was injured. The proclaimed offender hurled a hand grenade on the police pick-up.

The grenade exploded inside the pick-up, the front seat of the vehicle blown up where deceased Shafiullah was sitting. The other members of the police party later attacked the PO and killed him on the spot.

He informed that the PO Dildar Khan son of Rasheed Khan was wanted by the police in different cases of murder, kidnapping and robberies for the last four years. The bodies were shifted to the KDA medical complex for autopsy. According to the hospital sources the condition of injured constable and the accused Shah Faisal was stable.

The ASP said that the senior officers would announce compensation for the family of deceased ASI. ASI Shafiullah, a resident of Karak district left behind a widow, four daughters and two sons to mourn his death. Police officials informed that the body of the ASI would be taken to his home town where he will be buried with full honour.
