SUKKUR, July 8: District Nazim Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has said books worth Rs9 million have been purchased from the Sindh Textbook Board for free distribution among primary students.

In a press statement issued here on Wednesday, the nazim said the district government was giving priority to the education sector. He said a huge amount had been spent on construction, repair and up-gradation of schools, purchase of furniture and payment of scholarships to students in the district.

Mr Shah said scholarships amounting to Rs5.611 million had been distributed among girl students of middle level and Rs15.09 million had been provided to school management committees for development of their respective schools.

He said Rs0.885 million had been provided for the Adult Literacy Programme and Rs7 million for purchase of educational material and furniture for primary and middle schools. A sum of Rs4.6 million had also been released to the education department for choosing trained teachers.

POLIO: As many as 188,578 children would be vaccinated against polio by 565 health department teams during the polio eradication campaign from July 13 to 15 in the district, said an official statement issued here on Wednesday. The EDO, health, appealed to people to cooperate with the polio teams and get their children vaccinated against polio.

BANDIT KILLED: Police claimed to have killed one of two bandits in a encounter in Shaikh Mohalla, Lakhirdar police station jurisdiction, Shikarpur, on Thursday morning.

However, area residents alleged that police had killed the man in custody and were falsely claiming the encounter. Police said the bandits were hiding in the locality when a patrolling party of the Lakhirdar police reached there. They said the outlaws tried to flee but police opened fire on them, killing Wahid Bhutto.

Wahid's accomplice escaped. One pistol and 50 bullets were recovered from the possession of the killed bandit. Police said the bandit was involved in more than 20 cases of robbery, kidnapping and other crimes.

WOMAN KILLED: A woman was shot dead over a domestic dispute in the Allah Wadhayo Chachar village, Napar Kot police station jurisdiction, near Khanpur, Shikarpur, on Wednesday night.
