GUJRANWALA, July 8: Police arrested on Thursday District Bar Association President Chaudhry Saifullah Cheema and Secretary-General Malik Muhammad Sarwar Awan when they were going to Lahore to participate in the protest rally against Gujrat DPO Raja Munawar Husain.

Reports said the lawyers were on their way to Lahore when a heavy contingent of police, headed by Saddar ASP, stopped them near Chand da Qila bypass and asked them to return. On resistance, they arrested the bar leaders.

Receiving information about the arrest of the bar leaders, their colleagues, along with a number of lawyers of Lahore and the Gujrat bar, reached there and protested the police's 'roughshod' attitude.

They said the new prime minister was supposed to transfer the DPO, but he had not taken any action so far. Later, they gathered at the district bar room and adopted a resolution demanding that the DPO should be suspended from service and the bar leaders instantly set at liberty.

They threatened that they would observe complete strike and boycott courts on Friday (today) if their leaders were not released. They also pledged that strike against the DPO would go on till the acceptance of their demands.

INQUIRY: The DHQ Hospital's pharmacist involved in extortion has been shifted by the medical superintendent on a complaint and ordered an inquiry against him here on Thursday.

Under-training dispensers had lodged the complaint with MS Dr Nisar Ahmad that pharmacist Asif Mahmood extorted from them Rs300 each on various pretexts. They further alleged that the pharmacist was now demanding Rs1,500 more from each dispenser for a trip to Lahore.

They demanded that he should be changed immediately otherwise they would boycott the classes. Taking a prompt action, the MS shifted him and inducted pharmacist Asif Majid in his place.

Meanwhile, the MS also ordered an inquiry against the pharmacist and inducted Dr Sardar Ahmad and Dr Javed Rafiq as inquiry officers. He directed them to submit their report within three days.

SHOT DEAD: A man was shot dead by his rivals over money dispute in Aroop locality here on Thursday. Saleem was present in the house of his in-laws in Vinia Morr when accused Zulfikar Ali came there along with his accomplices. After an exchange of harsh words, they opened fire on him, injuring him seriously.

He died on the way to the local DHQ Hospital. The deceased had borrowed money from the accused few months ago, but did not return on repeated reminders.
