HYDERABAD, July 12: Community leaders and NGOs should chalk out a programme to ensure success of the second phase of the anti-polio campaign, scheduled for Aug 24.

This appeal was made by the EDO, community development, Ibrahim Qureshi, while speaking at a meeting held here on Monday.

The meeting was held in connection with the polio eradication campaign, to be launched in the Hyderabad district by the Extended Programme for Immunization in collaboration with the World Health Organization, community leaders and representatives of Qasimabad, Latifabad, Hyderabad city, Tando Allahyar, Matiari, Tando Mohammad Khan and Hala talukas.

The EDO said polio had been eradicated in Hyderabad, adding that strict vigilance was being kept on borderline areas like Hala, Tando Allahyar and Matiari talukas to prevent them from polio virus.

He said services of Pesh Imams should be acquired for creating awareness among rural people. The EDO, health, Dr Nazar Mohammad Junejo, said the polio campaign could not achieve its target without active support of the community.

He said it was a good sign that no polio case had been reported in Hyderabad during the last two and half years. He said three polio cases - two in Sanghar and one in Nawabshah - had been reported.

Dr Junejo said 90 free treatment centres and 16 diagnosis EPI centres had been set up in the Hyderabad district and anti-polio vaccines were being provided free of cost. He called upon parents to get their children vaccinated against the disease at the centres.

NAWABSHAH: The health department organized a walk here on Monday to motivate people to administer anti-polio drops to their children during a three-day campaign starting from July 13.

The walk, led by DCO Asadullah Dharejo and EDO, health, Abdul Khaliq, started from the District Council High School and ended at the press club. Representatives of different NGOs and city residents participated in the walk.

Speaking at the end of the walk, the EDO said that it was the duty of every citizen to take part in anti-polio campaign so that polio could be eradicated from the country.

KHAIRPUR: A polio walk was held here on Monday to create awareness among the people regarding the disabling disease. Led by health EDO Dr Abdul Haq Shaikh and Dr Murad Ali Khamisani, medical officers as well as political and social activists took part in the walk.

Carrying banners, the participants marched from the Chhatti Chowk, Mall Road, to the Lady Wellington Hospital, touching the Panj Gulla Chowk, in Shahi Bazaar, on the way.

LARKANA: A meeting recently held here decided that some 519,892 children in the district would be administered anti-polio drops in the ensuing campaign starting from July 13.

Speaking on the occasion, health officials said that the target would be achieved and for the purpose 1,134 mobile teams had been formed in all talukas. The DCO asked revenue officials to co-operate with mobile teams of the health department to make the drive a success.

The DCO also led a walk marking the world population day on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, he directed the population welfare department to arrange film shows in villages to education them about the population welfare programme.
