RAWALPINDI, July 13: The anti-terrorism court number-I here on Tuesday awarded seven-year rigorous imprisonment to a person for opening fire on a police party.

Judge Manzoor Ahmed Mirza also imposed a fine of Rs7,000 on the convict, Ansar Mehmood, for opening fire on the police and preventing them from performing their duties. In case of default, the convict would undergo another ten months jail term.

The prosecution had contended that the convict had opened fire on a police party of Saddar police station, Jhelum. Meanwhile, Civil Judge Ghazala Yasmin issued arrest warrants for a magistrate and four officials of New Town police station for not complying with the directives of the court.

The court issued the arrest warrants for magistrate Masaud Aslam, sub-inspector Tahir Abbas, assistant sub-inspector Ijaz Hussain and constables Mushtaq Ahmed and Mohammad Sarwar.

All the officials were witnesses to a fraud case registered by the New Town police, but they were not appearing in the court to record their statements despite receiving show cause notices in this regard.

Similarly, Additional District and Sessions Judge Akram Awan acquitted a person in a murder case after the family of the deceased pardoned the accused. According to the prosecution, the accused, Nasir Ahmed, scuffled with a person, Firdos, and shot him dead.

The incident had taken place in the jurisdiction of Murree police station. In response to a habeas corpus application, District and Sessions Judge Asad Raza gave two children in the custody of their mother after their recovery from the illegal detention of their grandmother.

The court recovered the two children, who were under four years of age, from the custody of their grandmother, Maroof Sultana, and gave them in the custody of their mother, Latif Meer.

The court, however, gave the custodial right of the 12-year-old Owais Mir to his grandmother. In her application, Latif Meer contended that her husband had died but her mother-in-law was keeping her three children with her.
