SUKKUR, July 19: Sindh is likely to face water shortage during next three days as the flow of water from the Tarbella Dam to the province has been reduced.
Irrigation sources told this correspondent on Monday that water level at Tarbella should have been 1,550 feet but due to no rains in the catchment area, the level had decreased to 1,432 feet, which had caused the reduction in the water flow to Sindh.
They said 180,000 cusecs of water was released from Tarbella on Sunday and 170,000 cusecs on Monday. They said Sindh would continue to receive 10,000 cusecs less water for next three days.
The sources said due to the less water supply from Tarbella, water could not be supplied into canals, originating from the Sukkur Barrage, according to their indents, adding that the Dadu Canal was already facing 20 per cent water shortage.
They said if the catchment area did not receive rain and the water level at the Tarbella Dam did not improve, Sindh would face acute shortage of water in September and October.
They said the temperature in Northern Areas had also fallen due to which ice melting process had slowed down, resulting in decrease in the level of Tarbella. On Monday, water level at upstream Guddu Barrage was recorded at 167,000 cusecs and downstream at 132,000 cusecs.
At Sukkur Barrage upstream, the level was 117,800 cusecs and 57,000 cusecs at downstream while at Kotri Barrage upstream, the level was recorded at 30,100 cusecs.
At Kalabagh upstream, water level was 184,000 cusecs and at downstream, it was 176000 cusecs. At Chesma upstream, the level was 224600 cusecs and at downstream, 200,000 cusecs. At the Taunsa upstream, the water level was recorded at 200,000 cusecs while at downstream, it was recorded at 173,000 cusecs.
