SIALKOT, July 25: The Punjab government has approved the establishment of Sialkot international engineering college in collaboration with the business community for providing skilled work-force to the export-oriented cottage industries.

This was stated by district Nazim Mian Naeem Javaid while talking to newsmen here on Sunday. District Coordination Officer Syed Tahir Raza Naqvi was also present on this occasion.

The Nazim said the district government had selected a suitable land in the city in this regard. He said as many as 73 government schools of the district had been provided with new buildings and all the other missing facilities.

He said funds had also been given to 660 schools for the construction of additional classrooms, boundary walls, supply of electricity and drinking water, furniture and toilet facilities.

Mr Javaid said the district had been divided into 17 educational sectors and the district government had decided to set up a girls high school in all the 133 union councils each and one girls higher secondary school in every sector.

He claimed that the district government had allocated Rs160 million for primary and elementary education. The Nazim said the Sialkot education department had started a 'rationalization programme' for appointing teachers at institutions closer to their residences, enabling them to perform their duties with confidence and devotion.

He said following the demand of the local people, MA classes had been started at the government postgraduate college for women, Daska.

ANNIVERSARY: The first death anniversary of the four slain civil judges was observed here on Sunday. Quran Khawani was held at a mosque adjacent to the court of Sialkot district & sessions judge for the eternal peace of the departed souls.

The local additional district & sessions judge, civil judges and a large number of lawyers from Sialkot, Daska, Pasrur, Shakargarh and Narowal were present at the occasion.

Meanwhile, a special condolence reference was also held at the district bar association's conference hall where the participants paid rich tributes to the judges. A delegation of Sialkot citizen police liaison committee (CPLC) visited the district jail and reviewed the security arrangements.

A team of judicial officers and lawyers visited Sargodha, Sahiwal, Mandi Bahauddin and offered fateha at the graves of the judges. Four civil judges, Asif Mumtaz Cheema, Muhammad Sagheer Anwar, Shahid Muneer Ranjha, Syed Shaharyar Bukhari and five prisoners were killed during a shootout at the district jail on July 25, 2003.
