SUKKUR, July 28: Lawyers in different cities of the province on Wednesday boycotted court proceedings and held protest meetings against misbehaviour of the Gujrat police against lawyers.
The Pakistan Bar Council and the Sindh Bar Council had given the protest call. The Sindh High Court Bar Association, Sukkur chapter, held a protest meeting, which was presided over by its president, Imdad Ali Awan.
In a resolution unanimously adopted at the meeting, the lawyers announced their support to the cause of the Gujrat District Bar Association and demand termination of service of Gujrat DPO Raja Munawar Hussain.
They also called for early arrest of culprits involved in the killing of judges in Sialkot and an inquiry into the matter by a commission, headed by a high court judge.
They said maximum help should be provided to families of the deceased judges. They appealed to President Gen Pervez Musharraf to look into the matter. The lawyers also boycotted court proceedings after 11am.
LARKANA: Lawyers in Larkana boycotted court proceedings to protest against the Gujrat incident. Later, the president, SHC Bar Association, Larkana, Illahi Bakhsh Kehar, presided over a joint meeting of the SHC Bar Association and the District Bar Association.
The meeting also condemned excesses of a police officer of the CIA, Larkana, who had raided the chamber of advocate Akeel Ahmad Bhutto and arrested his client.
The meeting in a resolution condemned the incidents of Gujrat and Larkana and demanded action against police officials concerned. It said the lawyers would continue their boycott of courts till their demands were accepted.
SHIKARPUR: Lawyers of the district observed a strike to protest against misbehaviour of the Gujrat police with lawyers. The lawyers boycotted court proceedings and held a protest meeting, chaired by Mazharuddin Siddiqui, president, District Bar Association. They demanded that the prime minister, Punjab chief minister and the IGP should take notice of the matter.
