RAWALPINDI, Aug 5: A policeman and a suspected robber were killed while a passer by was injured in what the police said an encounter in Saddar Barooni area on Thursday night.

Police said constable Mohammad Rafiq was going somewhere along with one of his friends when he saw three suspects passing through a street in Chak Jalaldin.

The police said one of the three men was a robber according to their record. Mohammad Rafiq recognized the robber and overpowered him. On seeing his accomplice in police custody, one of the culprits opened fire on the constable. As a result, both the police constable and the robber were killed on the spot.

A passerby, identified as Zafar Iqbal, a property dealer, was injured in the firing. When the SHO RA Bazaar, Afzal Shah, was contacted, he said the scene of the encounter did not fall in the jurisdiction of his station. However, he confirmed that a police constable posted at his station had been killed in the encounter. The DIG Rawalpindi could not be contacted.
