MULTAN, Aug 5: MPA and deputy parliamentary leader in the provincial assembly Dr Wasim Akhtar on Thursday called upon the Punjab chief minister to set up a women university in Multan.

This he said while addressing a meeting of the political committee of Jamaat-i-Islami, south Punjab, at Jamiaul Uloom, Masoom Shah Road. The legislator said the people of south Punjab, comprises 13 districts of former divisions of Multan, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan, were backward and did not like to send their daughters to general universities that were co-education-based.

Consequently, he said many talented girls remained deprived of their right to higher education. This handicap could be removed only by establishing a women university in southern Punjab.

He said the acquisition of knowledge was both duty as well as the right of every Muslim man and woman. He said the Multan district assembly through a unanimous resolution had already demanded of the authorities concerned to establish a women university in Multan.

The MPA urged the chief minister to allocate sufficient funds for the development of south Punjab. Other Jamaat leaders, including Khurshid Ahmed Khan Kanju, Rao Zafar Iqbal and Munir Ahmed Bodla, were also present on the occasion. -APP
