HYDERABAD: Protest march

Published August 11, 2004

HYDERABAD, Aug 10: Workers of grain godowns took out a procession from the Hali road to the press club and observed a token hunger strike to protest against non-regularization and non-payment of four months' salary of temporary chowkidars.

Speaking to the protesters, CBA Union secretary-general Ghulam Ali Khaskheli, Zafar Soomro and others said that 4,909 chowkidars were still awaiting regularization of their jobs although a summary on the matter was twice approved by the chief minister.

Accusing the bureaucracy of red-tapism, they said that the chowkidars had not been paid salaries for the last four months because of which their families were starving. They warned that if the chowkidars were not regularized and their dues not paid, the workers would hold a protest demonstration outside the Sindh assembly.
