SUKKUR, Sept 2: The National Accountability Bureau has initiated an inquiry against Shuja Ahmed Junejo, Additional Secretary, Irrigation and Power, and Qazi Zahoorul Hasnain, Superintendent Engineer , western Sindh circle, Larkana, for their alleged involvement in corruption, it is learnt.

The inquiry has been initiated on a complaint made by a contractor, Pir Ali Shah, to President Pervez Musharraf and other higher authorities. It is learnt that the corps commander Corps-V has asked the chairman of the provincial anti-corruption committee to examine the complaint and take necessary action.

According to the complainant, he was awarded a contract by the irrigation authorities for the strengthening of spurs 2/0 and 2/3 at Akil Agani Loop Bund in the jurisdiction of western Sindh circle, Larkana.

He claimed that the work on the project had been completed in all respects to the satisfaction of the officials concerned. A payment of Rs10 million had also been made for the work done, while the remaining amount of Rs5.9 million was yet to be paid by the department.

Now, he alleged, Zahoorul Hasnain was demanding one million rupees which he claimed would also be shared by the additional irrigation secretary, and threatened to initiate an inquiry against the contractor in a fake case.

Mr Hasnain also threatened to recommend the contractor's name to the authorities to blacklist him in case his demands were not met, the complainant further alleged and said that Mr Hasnain told him that he would recommend to the office of additional secretary, irrigation and power, Shuja Ahmed Junejo to blacklist him. It is said that the anti-corruption committee chairman has sent a letter to the complainant to record his statement before him.

BAN: The district administration has imposed a ban on performance of dances and tableaux by girl students before men in educational institutions. In a press release issued here on Thursday, DCO Abdul Qadir Mangi said EDO education, DO and ADOs would be personally responsible for 'wilful' or 'un-wilful' violation of the ban.

MEDICAL CAMP: The Pakistan Army is organizing a free medical camp at the Government High School Lohi, Taluka Khanpur, on the Defence Day of Pakistan (Sept 6). An army handout on Thursday said the camp would start at 8:30am and end at 5:00pm.

Consultant doctors will provide free consultancy and treatment to patients. X-ray and ultrasound facilities will also be extended to people with insufficient means.

VILLAGER MISSING: A villager has been missing since two days and relative fear that he might have been kidnapped. Mohammed Sharif, 24, a resident of village Abad Lakha, has been missing for the last two days. His father, Mohammed Ishaq told the police that his family feared that some kidnappers might have kidnapped his son, while returning from a public call office.
