SUKKUR, Sept 3: Civil Judge of Pano Aqil Abdul Rahim Chandio conducted a raid at the Baiji police station on Friday and found six persons who had been in illegal detention for 12 days.

They were in the custody without any record. Abdul Fateh Kalwar and Mohammad Zangejo had filed petitions before the district and sessions judge, Sukkur, on Thursday. They stated that two persons of the Kalwar tribe and four persons of the Zangejo tribe were arrested by Baiji police some 12 days ago, in a theft case, and kept in illegal detention.

The arrested persons were neither involved in any crime nor wanted by police in any case. Police also tortured them and demanded bribe for their release, said the petitioners. The district and sessions judge directed the civil judge, Pano Aqil, to conduct the raid and free all the detained persons.

The civil judge conducted the raid and recovered Imam Bux, son of Mohammad Ibrahim; Abdul Razzaq, son of Abdul Jabbar; Rustam Ali, son of Mohammad Urs; Faiz Mohammad, son of Mohammad Yakoob; Mohammad Ali, son of Ali Dino Kalwar and Shahzado, son of Mohammad Idrees Kalwar.

All the six persons, along with SHO Mohammad Khan Sial, were produced before the session judge, Sukkur, who ordered their release. The SHO responsible for the detention was kept under arrest till the rising of the court.

On the occasion, the released persons complained that they were tortured by police. The sessions judge asked them to submit an application so that an action could be taken against the SHO on this issue.

STRIKE: The Hindu community of Jacobabad on Friday observed a complete shutter-down strike and staged a sit-in to protest against the kidnapping and non-recovery of Santosh Kumar, Hindu trader of Larkana.

The strike was observed on the call of the Hindu Panchayat. Protesters passed through main streets of the city and staged the brief sit-in at the houses of Federal Minister Abdul Razzaq Thaheem, Provincial Minister Manzoor Panhwar and MPA NaseerKhoso.

Later, they staged another sit-in at Shaheed Allah Bux Park, blocked the road and burnt tyres. They blocked the road at the DCO Chowk, blocked and burnt tyres, and then finally gathered in front of the Jacobabad Press Club, Jacobabad.

Speaking on the occasion, Baboo Mahesh Kumar and MNA Aijaz Jakhrani and others said the law and order situation in Sindh was deteriorating. They demanded safe recovery of all the kidnapped persons including Santosh Kumar and protection to the Hindu community.

The march was led by PPP lawmaker Aijaz Jakhrani, President Hindu Panchayat Baboo Mahesh Kumar Lakhani, and chairman of the Shahree Ittehad Haji Nabi Rind. Activists of the PPP, JSQM, STPP and other political and social organizations and members of the Hindu Panchayat participated in the protest.
