FAISALABAD, Sept 16: As many as 15,547 qualified jobless male and females have applied for 499 vacant seats of teachers in different educational institutions in the district.

Sources in the education department told this correspondent that after the publication of advertisement about the vacant posts of teachers in various primary, middle, secondary and higher secondary schools, thousands of qualified youths applied to get jobs in the teaching profession.

According to breakdown given by sources, around 7,544 people applied for 131 seats of elementary and primary girls schools while for 161 seats of elementary and primary schools for boys, 5,158 have filed applications. Similarly, 2,845 candidates are trying their luck for 207 vacant seats of secondary and higher secondary schools for girls and boys.

Sources claimed that a number of applicants had attached with their applications recommendation letters signed by parliamentarians and members of local councils. Some of them had requested for getting the jobs by writing emotional remarks, they said, adding all the applications had been sent to the authorities concerned.

Sources also pointed out that scores of applicants had master degrees in different subjects and a good number of those were specialists in English, Islamic Studies, Pakistan Studies, science, Urdu and mathematics.

The applicants, they said, had started running from pillar to post to get the favour of MPAs, MNAs and office-bearers of the ruling PML to get jobs against the vacant seats. "Some of the corrupt elements in the department are offering jobs to the applicants with demands of bribe," sources said.

PROTEST: Hundreds of truckers blocked traffic on the Faisalabad-Jaranwala Road to protest the failure of police to arrest masked armed bandits who looted dozens of motorists on the road the other day.

The Jaranwala police were informed that the bandits were looting people, but they allegedly arrived at the scene after a delay of many hours. The protesters chanted slogans against the apathy of police and demanded immediate arrest of the dacoits. They dispersed peacefully when a police team held a dialogue with them and assured them that the outlaws would be arrested.
