GUJRANWALA, Oct 3: An SHO and four other officials, including moharrar of Kamoki Sadar police, were arrested here on Sunday for 'torturing' to death an accused involved in a theft case.
Reports said police took Muhammad Tariq into custody in a theft case some two weeks ago. In the meantime, the police tortured him during investigation as a result he died.
The police claimed that Tariq committed suicide by hanging himself in lockup but the postmortem report confirmed the torture on which DPO Dr Arif Mushtaq got arrested SHO Sub Inspector Amir Sundho and four other officials while Investigating Officer Muhammad Ramzan managed his escape.
Meanwhile, residents of Kamoki blocked the GT Road to protest against the custodial killing. However, later they dispersed when some senior officers assured them that the accused officials would be taken to task.
WASA WORKERS: The Water and Sanitation Agency employees have protested against their management for not disbursing their salaries.
Speaking at a meeting held here on Sunday presided over by employees union president Nasiruddin Humayun Malik, they said the agency management had failed to provide them salaries of the previous month in time due to which they were facing financial difficulties. They demanded that the management should disburse till Oct 5 their salaries, otherwise, they would besiege the offices of higher-ups of the agency.
PP-93: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal will retain its provincial assembly seat, PP-93, after defeating the candidates of the PML and the ARD in bypoll on Oct 11. This was claimed by MMA MNA Maulana Qazi Hamidullah while speaking at a meeting in connection with an election campaign of his aspirant Maulana Ashraf Jalali here on Sunday.
GUNNED DOWN: A youth was gunned down while his relative was injured by their rivals over an enmity here on Sunday at Chak Ehsan. Reports said Muhammad Irfan was on his way along with his relative Muhammad Safeer by a motorcycle.
Near the village, Muhammad Tariq and Muhammad Shahbaz opened fire on them. They were rushed to the THQ civil hospital in Wazirabad in a critical condition where Irfan breathed his last.
