KARACHI, Oct 4: Speakers at a press conference on Monday said that a day-long all Pakistan Labour Convention is being organized in the city on Thursday morning.

Speaking at the press conference held at the Press Club Trade Unions Action Committee convener S. P. Lodhi said that the convention was being organized jointly by 15 federations representing workers from all over the country.

He said that the convention will discuss various serious issues being faced by workers owing to which employees were facing hardships, and to formulate a strategy and future line of action as to how to deal with these issues.

He said that some of the serious issues were the promulgation of Industrial Relations Ordinance (IRO) 2002, which was not only against various provisions of the constitution but was also against different conventions of the ILO which have been signed by the country.

Other serious issues to be discussed were implementation of various anti-worker laws like the Section 2 B of Banking Companies Ordinance 1962; Section 2 A of the Services Tribunals Act; an ordinance promulgated in the year 2000 under which anybody could be sacked.

Labour leaders Habibuddin Junaidi, Saleem Raza, Shaikh Majeed, Ghafoor Baloch, Manzoor Razi and others were also present at the press conference. The organizations organizing the convention are All-Pakistan Trade Union Organizations; National Trade Union Federation; National Labour Federation Pakistan; Pakistan National Federation of Trade Unions; Peoples Labour Bureau Pakistan; Personnel Foundation; All-Pakistan Trade Unions Congress; All Pakistan Federation of Labour (Durrani group); The Banks Trade Union Alliance; Pakistan Trade Union Federation (Kalhoro group); Railway Workers Federation; Mehran Labour Federation; Communications Employees Federation; Joint Coordination Alliance of Trade Unions; and Pakistan Mazdoor Ittehad Trade Union Federation.
