SUKKUR, Nov 17: About 40 acres of cotton and rice crops were inundated when a 150-foot-breach occurred in the Old Masso Wah near Jehan Khan Unnar village near Mirpur Mathelo on the Eid.
Villagers said no irrigation official reached the spot despite the fact they were informed about the breach. The villages plugged the breach on the self-help basis. They also staged a protest demonstration against the indifferent attitude of the irrigation officials.
CORRUPTION: Embezzlement of Rs6.6 million was discovered in the National Bank of Pakistan, Shikarpur, on day before Eid and two officials of the bank were arrested on the complaint of the bank manager.
Some anonymous account-holders opened an account in the National Bank and later deposited cheques amounting to Rs1.4 million, Rs2.7 million and Rs2.5 millions in the account which they had received from a Karachi-based firm.
The bankers did not send the cheques to Karachi for inter-bank transaction but handed over the same to the account holder for collection. The account holder cleared all three cheques with bogus seals and stamps of the National Bank Karachi which were later drawn in Shikarpur.
On Saturday, at the time of the closure of the bank, the manager of the bank Ghulam Rabbani Mahar had talk on telephone with officials concerned in Karachi who informed the manager that the branch did not receive these cheques.
On this, he inquired into the matter thoroughly and handed over two officials of the bank Sheeraz Soomro and Arz Mohammed Abro to the Stewart Ganj police station but no FIR was registered against any body till the filing the report.
