GUJRANWALA, Nov 25: The postmortem of slain women and issuance of medico-legal certificates have become a problem at the divisional headquarters hospital due to shortage of female medical officers.

Sources told Dawn here on Thursday that only one lady doctor was working at the hospital against the strength of six while the heirs of slain women had to wait for hours for autopsy with no accommodation to stay.

Likewise, the injured women had to face a great deal of inconvenience for getting medico-legal certificates. They said several lady doctors had left the job and joined private hospitals where they were receiving handsome salaries and availing other facilities.

They said women were facing problems in connection with their treatment as they were reluctant to get their medical examination from male doctors. When contacted, Medical Superintendent Dr. Nisar Ahmad Cheema confirmed that almost six vacancies of women medical officers were lying vacant and he had sent a memorandum to the Punjab health secretary to this effect.
