LAHORE, Dec 7: International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Tuesday contradicted Pakistan's claims about Champions Trophy marketing rights, saying 80 to 90 per cent of the share goes to tournament organizers.
"It is not true that FIH is getting 60 or 70 per cent of the money generated through marketing at Champions Trophy. The organizers get about 80 to 90 per cent of the share," FIH president Els van Breda told reporters.
She responded when asked about the FIH share from sponsorship money being generated during the ongoing Champions Trophy. Interestingly, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has been claiming that FIH receives 60 to 70 per cent of the marketing rights, while organizers will get about 30 per cent.
Breda said not only 90 per cent of the marketing rights went to host nation, but the commission was also being given to the organizers. "Apart from money through marketing rights, the event organizers also receive commission," the FIH chief said.
Breda disclosed that Australia did not pull out from the Champions Trophy but had refused to accept the invitation after their government asked them not to travel to Pakistan owing to security concerns.
"It is not correct to say that Australia pulled out from Champions Trophy. In fact they had not accepted the invitation for the tournament after their government advised them not to travel to Pakistan because of security fears," she said.
The FIH president said the sport's international governing body had contacted the Australian hockey officials, but it was their government's decision not to send the team to Pakistan. Surprisingly, PHF has been claiming that Australia pulled out of the six-nation event at the eleventh hour citing security fears as the reason.
