SIALKOT, Jan 4: The entire Daska tehsil remained in the grip of crime during 2004 and the incidence of robberies and theft registered an increase as compared to 2003.

According to official statistics, as many as 3,383 cases were registered by Daska circle police during 2004 against 3,180 in 2003.

Eighty-four people were murdered in the tehsil during last year in various incidents while the police registered 121 attempted murder cases. In 2004, more than 52 people were killed and 35 injured in road accidents.

The Daska police registered 38 abduction cases and 68 kidnap-for-rape cases. Dacoits looted gold ornaments and other valuables worth Rs4.25 million in 31 incidents, of which the police recovered valuables amounting to Rs1.2 million.

During 29 robbery incidents on link roads, gangsters made off with valuables worth Rs1 million. As many as 53 motorcycles were taken away in 2004. Valuables, electronics and cash worth Rs14.8 million were taken away in 304 incidents of house theft, dacoity and burglary in Daska circle.

The police also registered 673 cases of illicit weapons, 407 of narcotics and 17 cases of gambling. Around 234 proclaimed offenders were arrested while 659 POs and 578 court absconders are still at large. People of the area have urged Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and IGP Sadaatullah Khan to take steps for improving law and order situation in the tehsil.

PEACE BODY: The district peace committee In its special meeting on Tuesday reviewed security arrangements and law and order situation in the district after the Zainabia mosque tragedy in October last year which left 35 people dead and injured more than 65.

District Nazim Mian Naeem Javaid presided over the meeting. Sialkot DCO Syed Tahir Raza Naqvi, EDO Rana Azhar Ali and ulema from all sects attended the meeting. The committee expressed its satisfaction over security arrangements and pledged to make all-out efforts to maintain peace in the district.

Later, Nazim Mian Naeem Javaid told the press that the district government would install five special security gates (two in Sialkot DHQs and one each in Daska, Sambrial and Pasrur THQs) besides, purchasing 780 metal detectors worth Rs5 million for all mosques, imambargahs, churches, temples and other sensitive places through citizens community boards to ensure peace in the area.

COUPLE KILLED: A couple was killed while nine other passengers, including two women, sustained injuries here on Tuesday in a road accident near Badiana, Pasrur tehsil.

Reports said a speeding bus (LXX-4977) overturned near Badiana. As a result sanitary worker George Masih and his wife Reshman Bibi were killed and nine passengers sustained injuries. The injured were admitted to a Pasrur hospital.
