Situation peaceful in Gilgit

ISLAMABAD, Jan 10: No untoward incident was reported from Gilgit, Skardu or any other districts of Northern Areas on Monday, sources told Dawn.

However, the body of a woman was found near a cinema house in Gilgit, but it did not bear any mark of violence or bullet injury, they said. The woman had apparently died of illness or severe cold, they added.

There was no break in the curfew which was clamped on Saturday after an attempt on the life of a prayer leader by three gunmen. People in the city, especially those stranded in hotels, are facing hardship as essential commodities are in short supply.

A local administration official said that arrangements were being made to repatriate the stranded people to their areas. "As soon as the situation returns to normal we will repatriate them," the official said.

At least 15 people, including two government officials, one of the attackers and two guards of the prayer leader, Agha Ziauddin, were killed and 15 others were injured in the violence which erupted after the attack.

A source quoting the deputy commissioner told Dawn that bodies of some of the victims had been handed over to their relatives, but six people who were burned alive in an attack on a forest officer's house by an angry mob, were yet to identified.

The federal government has chalked out a comprehensive plan to root-out sectarianism from the region and the Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas will announce the plan soon, the sources said.
