HYDERABAD, Jan 26: Two district council members have demanded that the leadership of federalist parties should categorically state their viewpoint on a proposal for creating a city district government in Hyderabad.

The members, Mohammad Yousuf Qureshi, who is also the Latifabad Union Council-10 nazim, and Ameena Naz, made the demand in a joint statement issued here on Wednesday.

Commenting on a statement of Sindh People's Party Parliamentarians president Syed Qaim Ali Shah that his party was against bifurcation of the district on political basis, they said the people of Hyderabad and Sindh had been witnessing duplicity of the party since 1971.

They said though the PPP had launched a movement against the Hyderabad city government, the party itself was responsible for bifurcation of various districts during its tenure and had also decided to bifurcate the Hyderabad district but the proposal was dropped due to a controversy whether Hala should be made a district headquarters.

They claimed that even today if Hala was made the district headquarters instead of Tando Allahyar, the PPP would have no objection. They observed that it was a unanimous demand of Hyderabad people to set up a city government comprising the defunct Hyderabad Municipal Corporation's areas.

The council members claimed that during the four years of the new local bodies system, no development work was carried out in the city. Even the Citizens' Community Board had not initiated any development schemes in the city, they further said.

TAX RECOVERY: Hyderabad City Council convener and naib nazim Abdul Qadeer Naghar has called for a detailed report on tax recovery, dangerous item tax and pushcart tax.

Giving his ruling on the issue of tax recovery at a meeting of the city council here on Wednesday, he directed the taluka municipal officer to take strict action against contractors recovering tax from people in violation of the taxation schedule.

The council also discussed issues relating to various contracts. Initiating the debate, Qamaruddin Shaikh said the council was not being taken into confidence on the award of various contracts and recovery of taxes.

Abdul Waheed Qureshi Ajmeri also said the city council was being kept in the dark and the matters were being decided outside the council. The convener adjourned the session till Jan 29.

PPP-SB: The Pakistan People's Party-SB will launch a protest movement from Feb 1 if the kidnapped judges are not recovered. This was announced by district party president Peeral Majidano and general-secretary Mehboob Siyal in a joint statement issued here on Wednesday.

LUMHS: The Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro, on Wednesday announced that the last date for submitting forms for first professional MBBS (part-II) annual examinations of 2005 had been extended up to Jan 31 without late fee and with a late fee of Rs200 up to Feb 7.
