FAISALABAD, Feb 18: The Punjab Local Government and Rural Development Department has ordered an inquiry against the tehsil officer (finance), tehsil municipal administration (city), Mujeeb Zaman Shami, on charges of inefficiency , misconduct and corruption.

LGRD Secretary Naguibullah Malik ordered the inquiry in capacity of chairman of the Punjab Local Government Board, appointing Safir Iqbal Ahmed, Additional Director-General (Accounts), Directorate General (Inspection), LGRD, as enquiry officer, to scrutinize the conduct of the accused.

The notice issued by the LGRD secretary says the BS-18 officer, Mr Shami, in the capacity of TO (Finance), Faisalabad TMA, allegedly put the collection rights of Building and Licence fees for 2003-2004 to auction without mentioning reserved price in the notice, and without properly publicizing the auction and its terms and conditions in violation of the set rules.

In the auction held on May 27, 2004, the notice said, surety bonds and bank guarantees were not obtained from the contractors of Advertisement Tax during the year 2003-2004. Due to this alleged illegality and misuse of powers, a sum of Rs4 million was still recoverable from the contractors of Advertisement Tax. An amount of Rs1,05,22,933 was outstanding against various contractors, which caused a substantial loss to the TMA.

POLITICAL SCENE: Sindh Assembly Deputy Speaker Raheela Tiwana has said there will be no impact of the recent meeting between Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif on the country's political scene, as people have already rejected the policies of the opposition parties.

Talking to newsmen here on Thursday night, she said the present government would complete its tenure and all efforts of the opposition parties to topple the regime would prove futile. She said there were sharp differences between the leaders of the ARD and the MMA, but they were merely raising slogans to befool the masses.

LIGHTS: Tehsil Municipal Administration (City) Nazim Mumtaz Ali Cheema has said 450 lights will be installed on the Faisalabad-Samundri Road with the financial assistance of a local industrialist. The project is estimated to be completed at a cost of Rs30 million.

Presiding over a meeting held to review arrangements for the installation of lights on the Samundri Road, the Nazim said the owner of a beverage company and sugar mill had promised to provide the huge amount for this project that would be completed within a record one month. Lights had already been installed on the Chenab Club Road, Jaranwala Road, Satiana Road and the Mall Road, he added.
