GUJRANWALA, March 1: Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool has ordered demolition of the old railway station platform for the dualization of GT Road from Gondlanwala Chowk to Sheranwala Bagh to reduce traffic pressure.
The governor also cancelled on Tuesday the construction lease of a business plaza near the Sialkot railway crossing. Reports said city tehsil Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad held a meeting with the governor in Lahore and discussed the 'grand city plan' on Monday.
He directed the Nazim to remove lunda markets along the track besides, elimination of all hurdles in the dualization of GT Road and construction of a flyover to revamp traffic system in the city.
Mr Maqbool said the government wanted to provide better facilities to people and would not put up with any negligence by the departments in implementation of the city plan.
Earlier, the governor was informed that people of the area were facing a great deal of inconvenience owing to non-construction of an underpass, T-type flyover and dualization of GT Road. The governor assured them that the government would provide funds for the plan while the tehsil council should immediately remove all hurdles in this regard.
BLACK DAY: The Pakistan Medical Association observed black day here on Tuesday to protest against the rape of Dr Shazia in Balochistan. At a meeting held here on Tuesday, presided over by PMA chief Dr Zahid Mian, the participants, including Dr Ghulzar, Dr Amanullah, Dr Ibrar Kaleem and others, alleged that the government had failed to take action against the alleged rapist(s).
Another human smuggler was arrested by a raiding party of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) from Arafat Colony here on Tuesday. Reports said accused Nazar Husain received Rs144,000 from Rashid Begum to send her son abroad. But he neither sent her son abroad nor returned the amount. On a tip-off, the FIA team arrested him.
