GUJRANWALA, March 9: A youth was killed and five others injured, two of them seriously, when a gas cylinder exploded in a shop at Alipur bypass intersection here on Wednesday.

Six workers, including Nawazish, Akbar Ali and Shahid, were present in the shop when a cylinder exploded. Nawazish died on the spot while the others sustained injuries. The injured were taken to the local DHQ Hospital where the condition of Akbar and Shahid was stated to be critical. Aroop police have registered a case and are investigating.

PROTEST: The business community of Wazirabad tehsil have protested against the police for the rising incidence of robberies and asked the IGP and other high ups to provide them protection and security.

At a meeting held here on Wednesday, they pointed out that as many as 15 outlaws on Tuesday broke into a plastic factory of Malik Bashir Hassan near Nullah Pulkho by scaling the boundary wall.

They held hostage the owner, engineer Liaqat Ali and gunman Muhammad Shafi, besides other workers and took away plastic sheet worth Rs600,000, chemical worth Rs400,000, PVC string worth Rs100,000, cash and other valuables. They said dacoits looted various shopkeepers and citizen during the past few days and the police had completely failed to control the incidence of robberies.

STRIKE: Low-paid employees of government and semi-government departments observed a strike in favour of their outstanding demands here on Wednesday. All-Pakistan Clerks Association divisional president Tahir Mahmood Bhatti and others visited various offices and pledged that their struggle would continue till the acceptance of their demands.

KILLED: A man killed his father-in-law over a domestic issue in Atawa village here on Wednesday. Reports said Akbar Ali was present in his house when Khalid came there along with his accomplice and shot him dead. Police have registered a case.
