HYDERABAD, April 13: Sindh Minister for Communications and Works Pir Sadruddin Shah Rashdi has stressed the need for building more reservoirs and dams in order to meet future needs of water for people, agriculture and power generation. He was speaking to newsmen at the residence of Pakistan Muslim League-Functional leader Ali Akbar Nizamani on Monday.

“There is need for evolving consensus among provinces over issues of greater Thal canal, Kalabagh dam and NFC because these issues related to welfare of the country”, he said.

He said in future water requirement would increase not only for population but agriculture purposes so that we could become self-sufficient in production of wheat, cotton and other corps.

“There is history of super floods every seven years and wherefrom we would get water when needed in difficult times if there are no reservoirs. If we have enough water then it can be released down stream Kotri as well which is needed”, he said.

He said the government would not ignore that it had faced a shortage of water over the years adding that provinces would have to trust each other before taking any decision.

“Let us not talk about distribution of NFC on the basis of resources or population and provinces should decide that everyone should get its due share if we believe in federation”, said the minister.

Referring to the Sindh Assembly’s unanimous resolution on NFC, he said Sindh should keep its demand and ensure that provinces must get due share according to their needs and there would be no harm if it was fulfilled in that way.
