SUKKUR, Jan 10: Acute water shortage prevailing in the city for the last 72 hours due to the de-silting work of the River Indus, which would last up to Jan 20, has made the lives of the people miserable.
Municipal authorities had announced the water shortage but failed to make alternative arrangements to minimize the suffering of the people.
The municipal officials tried to supply the water standing on the other side of the river, but failed as the suction pump installed for the purpose broke down.
The most affected areas include Local Board, New Pind, Old Sukkur, Islam Colony, Shams Abad, Garam Godi, Civil Hospital, Nau Goth and Minara Road.
The people were compelled to fetch water from the low-lying areas of the city where underground water was available.
Even worshippers were told to make Wazoo arrangements at their homes as no water was available at the mosques.
Sources close to the municipal authorities said water tankers were being sold from Rs500 to 1000.
Irrigation officials said that the shortage could become grave as the water level was very low at the other side of the river.
