DADU, Feb 7: The drainage system in the city seems to have collapsed as sewage has accumulated on main roads and streets. Talking to this correspondent , the residents said water supply pipelines were also broken at several places due to which drinking water had mixed with filthy water.

Main drains of Gharibabad, Mazdoorabad, Jagatabad, Civil Hospital Road, Station Road, Marakhpur, Shani, Pir Bux Colony and other areas of the city are overflowing and heaps of garbage are lying at different places.

Azam Leghari of Najam Colony said residents of the colony had not been provided with civic facilities by the Dadu taluka municipal administration and that he had complained to the taluka Nazim but to no avail.

Union Council-I Nazim Raees Abdul Ghaffar Khero said open and underground drainage and water supply systems in his and three other union councils of the city had collapsed due to the negligence of the TMA.

He said diseases were spreading in the area due to the failure of drainage and sanitation systems.

He said the drainage system was laid in 1982 but it had not been repaired to date.

Mr Khero complained that DCO Aijaz Mangi had not given him development schemes.

He demanded Rs2 million for repair of the drainage system.

Union Council-III Nazim Mohammad Amin Mirani held the DCO and the TMA responsible for the failure of drainage, sanitation and water supply schemes.

Taluka Nazim Syed Zafar Ali Shah said he had taken up the issue of release of development funds to the TMA at a Mushawarati Council meeting in December 2003.

He said funds were released to engineers of the district support team and the EDO, works and services, illegally and alleged that engineers were paying 42 per cent commission to the DCO and were using substandard material in development schemes of the drainage system.

He said he had provided a proof of corruption of the DCO to National Reconstruction Bureau chairman, Sindh chief minister and the chief secretary who had formed separate inquiry committees.

The Nazim blamed the failure of different schemes on the DCO, engineers of the district support team and the works and services department.

He said he was supervising sanitary staff but budget was not being released to him.
