FAISALABAD, Feb 7: Students, academic and non-academic staff of the National Textile University have threatened to aggressively resist reopening of the university without acceptance of their demands.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, the leaders of the Joint Action Committee of students and staff said the university management had announced that it would reopen the institute tomorrow (Monday).

"We want to make it clear to the district administration and the university management that we will strongly protest reopening of the institute without acceptance of demands," they warned.

They said the university students had been agitating for the last three months against the introduction of self-finance scheme for admissions as well as doubling the number of seats.

They maintained all their efforts to pressure the government and the NTU administration for the acceptance of their demands had proved futile due to indifferent attitude of the BoG members.

The All-Pakistan Textile Mills Association, which is currently running the affairs of the university, had converted it into a private company and was fleecing the students on one pretext or the other, alleged the students.

The NTU administration had closed down the campus on Dec 11, 2003, and forced the students to vacate hostels taking plea of unlawful activities over there. However, the students refused to vacate their hostels and continued protests. On Saturday last, the NTU administration, through a special notification, had directed the students to attend their classes from Feb 9.
